Everyone knows how the story ends: the boy cries wolf too many times, and the one time it’s real, the village doesn’t come. We tell it like the moral is about honesty. I don’t think it is anymore. Look at that field now, every face lit the same pale blue, all of them already looking at something, none of it him. He could be telling the truth for the first time in his life and it wouldn’t matter, because nobody’s scanning the tree line these days, they’re scanning a feed. We didn’t stop believing the boy. We just stopped watching for wolves.
