By hour six of the design phase I’d stopped asking whether the trebuchet was necessary and started refining its counterweight ratio. That’s usually the tell. The kettle was ready forty minutes ago, sitting there getting cold, patiently, the way kettles do, while I solved a targeting problem nobody actually had. Somewhere in there I must have convinced myself the elaborate part WAS the point, since walking away now would mean admitting the first three hours were wasted, and admitting that is so much harder than building a fourth. By hour eight I was accounting for wind resistance. There is no wind. There is a kitchen, and a mug, and a teabag that has been waiting so long it has started to steep itself out of pity. But the machine, I will say, is magnificent. Ask anyone who has watched it not make tea.
