I always feel a quiet flutter when a box lands on the porch; a small, forgotten treat, waiting. It stands there, monumental in its corrugated glory, promising an easy arrival. You peel the tape back; those flaps splay open like some strange, welcoming maw. Inside, the new thing, nestled among the void fill. But sometimes, later, holding the empty husk for recycling, I wonder what else came along with it. What unseen weight hitched a ride; the quiet hum of endless want, perhaps, or a subtle, insistent pull to click again. What ancient, unforeseen passengers journey on these cardboard ships to our gates?
