The best bread demands its own space, doesn’t it; a proud, unwieldy sphere of crust and crumb. But then there’s the toaster, an uncompromising rectangle of heat, a tiny, domestic bed. We often find such joy in making things fit, in the sharp click of conformity, even if it means mangling something perfect. It’s a strange, almost manic satisfaction; to force the round peg into the square hole, cleaver in hand, laughing a little as the crumbs scatter. We do it to ourselves sometimes; reshape our unruly selves for an imagined slot.
